January 2011 Quiz

First, I hope you all had a Happy Christmas! Remember to keep me in mind when you are going through your holiday pictures - even if you don't want me to share them on this blog.

Let's all hope that 2011 brings us all peace, joy and prosperity!

For the January quiz, let’s stay in Roy and Sophia’s family. Roy and Sophia raised nine children: Margaret, Mary, Ed, Evelyn, Art, Howard, Ray, Arnie and Joe.

Which one of the following was NOT a nickname of one of their sons?

A) Abe
B) Babe
C) Pinky
D) Rusty

For extra credit, match the nickname to the correct person.

-- ANSWER

“Abe” was Art, “Babe” was Arnie and “Rusty” was Ray, which means that C) Pinky was not a nickname of one of their sons. (However, I believe Grandpa Roy was called Pinky.)

02/25/2011 – Since I posted the answer to this quiz, I have heard from Mary [Pendleton] Ryan (1) that Grandpa Roy, her father, was called “Pink” not “Pinky” as he had a penchant for wearing pink shirts! Who woulda thunk it???

Service - Nate Hanna

NATE HANNA (4), Mark “Mick” Hanna (3), Pat [Nles] Hanna (2), Margaret [Pendleton] Niles (1).

29, Oct 2011: Nate (pictured) has been serving his first tour in Afghanistan.

On October 18th, Nate received serious injuries to his left arm from an RPG attack. He was transported to Germany, and then to Fort Sam Houston in Texas, where he is currently undergoing more surgeries to repair his arm. His injuries are not life threatening now, but he has already had five surgeries and skin grafts. It is unknown what more will need to be done. It could be six months before they know the full extent of the damage to the nerves…the bones will mend (with the plates and pins), but they are worried about the tissue damage.

Nate’s parents, Mick (3) and Cheryl Hanna, would appreciate it if you would keep Nate in your thoughts and wish him a speedy recovery.

This information was supplied by Tammy [Hanna] Woodring.

Service - Jared Hanna

JARED HANNA (4), Greg Hanna (3), Pat [Niles] Hanna (2), Margaret [Pendleton] Niles (1).

29, October 2010: Jared is in the army and is now stationed in El Paso after two tours in Iraq. He should be out of the army within the next year and the hope is that he will not be redeployed to Iraq again.

December 2010 Quiz

First, I apologize for the tardiness in this month’s posts. Once again, too much going on!!!

Second, I would like to wish you all the happiest holiday season possible. I’d also like to invite you to share any pictures you might take of your families celebrating the season with the rest of us. E-Mail your digital pictures to me and, if I get enough, I will put up a slide show.

For the December, 2010 quiz, let’s get back to more recent history. You may notice in December’s birthdays, I’ve listed Beeley Blanchford Pendleton’s birthday on the 13th. He was born on Deer Island, New Brunswick in 1824 and died in La Crosse, Wisconsin on 29, Mar 1906. How many different places did he live during his lifetime?

A) 4
B) 6
C) 8

For extra credit, name the places he lived in chronological order.

Check back next month for the answer!

-- ANSWER

Count along with me… He was born in Deer Island, New Brunswick (1.)

From there, he moved to Darlington, Wisconsin (2) where he married Catherine Newkirk on 30, Oct 1855 and where their first son, James, was born in 1856.

In 1858, he and Catherine were living in Blanchardville, Wisconsin (3) where their second son, Isaac, was born.

From there, they moved to Kirksville, Missouri (4) where their first daughter, Florence, was born in 1862. Sadly, Isaac died there in 1862 just shy of his 4th birthday.

By 1864, they were in Blanchard, Wisconsin (5) where their second daughter, Pleasant Emma, was born and where Florence died in 1865.

Finally, by 1867, they were living in La Crosse, Wisconsin (6) where the last four of their children were born: George (1867), Elmaria (Elmira?) (1869 – 1870), Lily (1871) and Roy (1879.)

So, the correct answer is: B) 6.

November 2010 Quiz

This month, I’m still playing off September’s quiz that dealt with the significance of September 8th, 2010.

One of the multiple choice answers was that it was the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Brian Pendleton in North America. We know that was not correct, so this month’s question is: When did Brian Pendleton arrive in America?

a. Before 1610
b. Between 1610 and 1625
c. After 1625

Check back next month for the answer.

-- ANSWER

Although I have scoured the passenger lists of all the pilgrim ships transcribed so far, I have not found the exact date or ship on which Brian came to America.

The earliest record I can find of Brian being in America comes from: “Brian Pendleton and his Descendants” (1910) aka, “the Book.” In that work, Everett Hall Pendleton states on page 2, “The earliest notice of him [Brian] in the colonies appears in the records of Watertown, Mass., which show that at the first meeting of the citizens there, 23, August, 1634, William Jennison, Brian “Pembleton,” and John Eddie were chose by the freemen to order the civil affairs of the town.”

He was later made a freeman of the Colony which established that he was a member of a Puritan church and thus was able to be a full citizen of the Colony. At that time, only members of the Puritan church were allowed to be full citizens and have any voice in the government of the Colony.

So, the correct answer to the quiz is “C. After 1625.”

I will continue my search for the name of the ship and the exact date he arrived in America. If you are interested in researching passenger lists from Pilgrim ships, check out this site:

October 2010 Quiz

Last month’s quiz dealt with the significance of the date September 8, 2010. We learned that it was the date that Mary [Pendleton] Ryan became the longest lived relative on record. This, of course, leads to this month’s quiz. Who was the previous “record” holder? This is not multiple choice, but as a hint, remember this site is dedicated to both Roy AND Sophie [Hanifl] Pendleton… (Enough of a hint????)

Check back next month for the answer!

-- ANSWER

In September, 2010’s quiz, I asked about the significance of September 8, 2010. Last month, we learned that was the date Mary [Pendleton] Ryan became the longest lived relative on record. The question was then, who was the previous “record” holder?

The answer to that question is Sophie [Hanifl] Pendleton’s sister, Mary [Hanifl] Brey. She was born 23, March 1886 in Oggau, Austria-Hungary and passed away on 5, December 1987 which is 37,146 days or 101 years, 8 months, 13 days.

Allow me to add a little personal info into one of these quizzes… Aunt Mary Brey was another of the amazing women in our family.

In my family, we always called her “Aunt Mary Brey”, never just “Aunt Mary” - mainly to distinguish her from Aunt Mary Ryan who was also always called “Aunt Mary Ryan.” (My daughter once told me that, when she was young, she thought “Mary Brey” and “Mary Ryan” were both just unusual first names… Marybrey… Maryryan!) I also recall that we called her “Tunte Brey”, which is the German form.

In 1891, at age 5 years, she immigrated with her parents to the US and settled in La Crosse, Wisconsin where she lived the rest of her life. She worked for a time at the La Crosse Rubber Mills making shoes.

In 1923, she married Casimir Brey, the widower of her best friend, Catherine, who died at a young age leaving 2 daughters, Genevieve [Brey] Morehead and Jeanette [Brey] Erbes. Mary raised these two girls as her own.

If you’ve followed this blog, you are aware Roy and Sophie had a large family during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Aunt Mary Brey and her husband (along with Mary Ryan) took over much of the responsibility of raising my dad, Joe. Sophie died when I was 2 years old, so I thought of Tunte Brey as my “grandma.”

Mary was very involved with Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse. She walked the 4 or 5 blocks each way to attend Mass almost every day well into her 90’s. As a member of the “Lady’s Club,” she hand knitted scarves and bandages to send to the “leper’s colony” in Louisiana.

She never owned a TV, but during the 1960’s and 1970’s she looked forward each week to going across the street to Mrs. Hemmelsbach’s house to watch “Gunsmoke”. She thought James Arness was a very handsome fellow and she loved the antics of the character, “Festus.”

She did have a 1930’s vintage radio that she liked listening to. Her radio was about 3 feet tall and about a foot and a half wide and about a foot deep and it had a tiny lighted dial. Her favorite radio program was a daily local talk show called “Vox Pop” which was hosted by Jim Lafky, who happened to be my best friend’s dad. She thought Mr. Lafky sounded like the nicest guy.

Keep in mind this was the early 1970’s and Mr. Lafky, who would have been in his 40’s at the time, was a professor at UW-L. I arranged for Mr. Lafky to drop by my parent’s house one night when Aunt Mary Brey was there for supper. I don’t know what mental image she had of Mr. Lafky, but when he showed up with his long hair and blue jeans, she had NO time for him and never listened to his radio program again!

Another thing I remember about Aunt Mary Brey is the incredible potato pancake suppers she made. She would peel and hand grate pounds of potatoes and fry the pancakes on the cast iron gas stove she had in her basement. Sometimes I would ride the bus to her house early to help. What a treat for me! It’s hard to believe that a meal of potato pancakes all by themselves, or maybe with some wieners, could be quite the feast!

I mentioned earlier that she was active in Holy Trinity Church. It was on the steps of that church that her hip broke. I don’t remember the exact date, but it must have been around 1980, or when she was about 95. After this, she had to go into assisted living because she was no longer able to take care of herself.

She spent the last years of her life in nursing homes, but, for the most part, she was fully in control of her senses. She had my dad bring her a piece of doweling and she would tie a rag on the end so she could clean the inside of the radiator in her room because the janitors never got it clean enough.

My daughter, Michelle, and I visited her many times in the home and each time we’d stop by, Tunte Brey had a quarter for Michelle… and sometimes, one for me, too!

She truly was a kind and gentle woman.

Thanks for letting me share this brief biography of Mary [Hanifl] Brey.

“Add that number!!!”… or… “Then why are all the generation numbers smaller???"

I am very confident I have found the father of Thomas Pendleton (1). His name was Henry Pendleton and he was born in the Manchester, Lancashire area (probably Eccles or Salford) of England about 1474. I found his name on the LDS (Mormon) genealogy site a few weeks ago. According to the information on that site, one of his sons was named Thomas who was married to a Margerie. One of Thomas’ sons was named Edward who was married to Ann Newton. Thomas, Margerie, Edward and Ann Newton all match my records.

There is so much bad genealogical information on the internet that I didn’t feel comfortable announcing this until I found at least 2 other sources verifying the link, which I did.

Henry had several children other than our Thomas. I am in the process of verifying them. I am reasonably sure that he had a son named George, another son named Francis and at least one daughter, Elizabeth. Again, I won’t add these people to the tree until I can verify them.

At this point, I haven’t found any information about who Henry’s parents might have been, but, who knows, eventually, I may find his parents.

Because I’m working backward, all of the generation numbers might keep changing. To make it easy on ME (and that’s the important part!) I am now going to CHANGE my generation numbering system to the relationship to Roy and Sophie Pendleton. In other words, Roy and Sophie will now be Generation 0. Their children will be Generation 1. Their grandchildren will be Generation 2 etc…

Direct ancestors BEFORE Roy and Sophie will now be numbered with a negative number. Roy’s father, Beeley, will now be designated as Beeley Pendleton [-1]. Roy’s grandfather, John, will now be designated as John Pendleton [-2] etc… Sophie's father, Karl, will now be designated as Karl Hanifl (-1). Karl's parents will now be Andreas Hanifl (-2) and Rosalia Schaub (-2).

Click on "Genealogy" under "Categories" on the left side of this page to see a listing of all previous generations.

Oh, and by the way... It may take me a bit to update everything, so bear with me!

September 2010 Quiz

This month’s quiz is a tough one… What significance does the date September 8, 2010 have?

A. When written in the European format, it is 8/9/10.

B. It is the date on which Mary [Pendleton] Ryan (1) becomes the oldest living relative on record.

C. It is the 400th anniversary of the date the first of our ancestors, Brian Pendleton (-9), landed in America.

Check back next month for the answer!

-- ANSWER

Although it is true that when written in the European format, it is 8/9/10, that’s hardly noteworthy.

I’m also just going to tell you that the date was NOT the 400th anniversary of Brian Pendleton landing in America, but I’m saving the correct answer to that question for another quiz.

That means the correct answer is that was the date Mary [Pendleton] Ryan became the longest lived relative on record. She was born 25, December 1908 and on 8, September 2010 had lived an incredible 37,147 days! That translates to 101 years, 8 months, 14 days, or to really blow your mind… 3.21 BILLION seconds! She is a truly remarkable lady. Let’s all hope that she lives another 3 billion seconds!

Special Birthday Notice

It was just brought to my attention, today, that Gert Pendleton, wife of Arnie Pendleton (1), will be celebrating her 90th birthday on August 30th. Please consider giving her a call or dropping her a card to help her mark this milestone!

Family Picnic

The annual family picnic was held today. The turnout was not quite as good as last year, but a good time was had by all who were there.

A raffle was held to help cover the cost of this year's picnic. I'm please to report that enough was raised to cover this year and there is a good "seed" fund for next year. Rhonda Reed (15) organized some games for the kids with prizes going to the winners. Luckily, ALL of the kids were winners!

Fortunately, the weather cooperated also. It was cloudy most of the afternoon which kept the temps in the low 80's rather than the upper 90's that had been predicted.

My sister, Sue [Pendleton] Ender (14), posted the pictures she took today. You will probably have to cut and paste the link into your browser.

https://cid-d6f11f791bfb0c12.photos.live.com/play.aspx/pictures?Bsrc=EMSHOO&Bpub=SN.Notifications

If it doesn't work, let me know and I will try sending you the link by E-Mail.

I just want to express my personal thanks to Sue [Roberts] Heath (15) for all the time and effort she put into pulling this off again this year. She is already planning next year's picnic. The date will be August 7, 2011 - MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!!

2010 Family Picnic - Update

I received an E-Mail from Pam (Sue) Heath about the upcoming family picnic.

The date will be Sunday, August 8th from 10 AM to around 3 PM at the Holland Town Hall on McHugh Road just west of Holmen, Wisconsin.

Pam says that she will have BBQs and buns, but you are on your own for grilling. Please bring your own lawn chairs, beverages and a dish to pass.

She also said that she was planning to do a raffle for the kids, so if you would like to donate a small toy or any other item, it would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you need directions or if you have any questions, please feel free to E-Mail me and I will forward it on to Pam.

Hope to see you all there!

August 2010 Quiz

I had so much fun figuring out compiling the answer to last month’s quiz, I decided to look back at ancestors to see what the most common male and female names were. I limited the search to just relatives, not including spouses.

So this month’s quiz is what are the most common male and female names overall?

-- ANSWER

At this point in time, I have about 25,000 names in the tree. The results this time were not quite as surprising.

For women, the most common name was Mary (280 people.) The next most common names were Sarah (150) and Elizabeth (72.)

For men, the most common name was William (272 people.) The next most common names were Charles (195) and John (157.)

I think that’s about as far as I can go with names.

2010 Family Picnic

Good News! There will be another family picnic/reunion this year thanks to the efforts of Pam Heath. She had the foresight to reserve the same shelter as last year.

Here is the text of the E-Mail I received from Pam:

“I have had a few inquires about this years reunion. I am glad that people are asking. The shelter has been reserved, the same place as last year, I was in there on january 6th to make sure I could get it. Just didn't think everyone would be thinking about it already. I have had a few suggestions of changes, and things to add to keep it more fun for everyone, so if you have ideas , or would like to get a committee formed to do further planning , let me know and I will try to set something up. I have a busy summer coming up, so I can use all the help I can get. Lets try to make this one bigger and better than last year. please pass this email on to anyone else who's emails I don't have included. thanks Pam Heath, peggy pendletons daughter, Ed Pendletons grand-daughter”

The date will be Sunday, August 8th from 10:00 AM to around 4:00 PM at the Holland Town Hall on McHugh Road about a mile west of Highway 53.

If you have any questions, contact Pam Heath or feel free to drop me an E-Mail: PaulPendleton@Comcast.net.

July 2010 Quiz

For this month’s quiz, let’s think of all of Roy and Sophie’s grandchildren and their descendants. What are the most common boy’s and girl’s first names? (I’m just counting relatives, not spouses.)

Check back next month for the answer!

-- ANSWER

I have record of just under 300 of their descendants and I was a little surprised at the results.

There is a 3 way tie for male names (6 people each): Andrew, David and Michael. The most common female name is Julie (4 people).

The next most common names are Daniel and Robert (4 people each) for male names and Angela, Kimberly, Patricia and Tamara (3 each) for female names.

June 2010 Quiz

For this month’s quiz, let’s go back to “immediate” family. How many siblings did Roy Wellington Pendleton (Grandpa Roy) have?

A. Three
B. Five
C. Seven

For extra credit, name them!

Check back next month for the answer.

-- ANSWER

Roy Wellington Pendleton (Grandpa Roy) was the eighth, and youngest, child of Beeley Blanchford Pendleton & Catherine [Newkirk] Pendleton. So, the correct answer is: C. Seven

You were also asked to name them for extra credit. They were: James (1856 – 1938), Isaac (1858 – 1862), Florence (1862 – 1865), Pleasant Emma (1864 – 1936), George (1867 – 1932), Elmaria (1869 – 1870) and Lily (1871 – 1956).

May 2010 Quiz

What distinction does Ann Williams [Pendleton] Rogers (1820 – 1861) hold?

A. She was the first Pendleton to hold a patent.
B. She was the first Pendleton woman to circumnavigate the world.
C. All of her immediate family (husband and children) died in different countries,

-- ANSWER

Ann Williams [Pendleton] Rogers was another in the long list of Pendletons who were involved in the maritime industries and traveled extensively. She and her husband, Richard J Rogers had 2 children, Allen and Ernest. Allen died in 1858 at age 12 in Havana, Cuba. Ernest died in 1857 at age 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ann died in 1861 at age 41 in Marseilles, France. I’m not sure exactly where Richard died, but everything indicates he died in the US. So… the correct answer is C. All of her immediate family died in different countries.

New Feature

I have a couple housekeeping matters… First, I’m dropping Anniversaries as a regular monthly feature. I’d be more than happy to post an announcement if anyone is having an anniversary, though. Just send me an E-Mail.

Second, I have had a number of requests to start a posting of relatives who are on active duty in the armed forces. If you know of any relatives who are currently in the service, let me know and I will list them. You may want to include their mailing address or E-Mail address so people can contact them.

April 2010 Quiz

This month's Quiz deals with Yours Truly. Many of you may know that I have my own tax and accounting business, as well as holding down a full time job as a Controller for another business. And, since this is the end of Tax Season, this month's question is: Why isn't there a new Quiz?

A. I lost track of time and didn't prepare one.
B. I'm really sorry there is no new Quiz.
C. There will be a new Quiz in May.

Check back next month for the surprising answer!

-- ANSWER

The correct answer is D. All of the above. I prepare these questions and answers a few months in advance and I thought I had one prepared for April, but I didn’t.

March 2010 Quiz

This month’s quiz borrows the theme from last December’s quiz: “Most Children.” In that quiz, I indirectly asked about the most children fathered by a Pendleton man. This month the question is what is the largest number of children born to a Pendleton woman?

A. 15
B. 17
C. 19

Check back next month for the answer...

-- ANSWER

First, I thought this one would be easy. I started looking for mothers who had 12 children and found that there were quite a number who had 13. So I narrowed the search to 13 or more and found quite a number who had 14 children. So, I narrowed again to 14 or more and found there were at least 4 Pendleton women (and one wife of a Pendleton) who gave birth 15 times! I didn’t find any who had more than 15 children, although, even though I now have about 25,000 people in the family tree, I still have a lot of missing “branches.”

I think the “winner” would have to be Deborah (-4) Pendleton and her husband, Joseph Clark. Deborah was born May 9, 1737 in Westerly, Rhode Island and died in Petersburg, New York – I’m not sure of the date of her death. Of her 15 children, all lived into adulthood the youngest dying at age 31. In fact, 12 of her children lived to be at least 69 and the longest lived child, Simeon Clark (-3), died at age 88 in 1850.

The other 3 Pendleton women who had 15 children were: Lydia (-3) Pendleton [1789 – 1873] and Elisha Bennett; Mary (0) Pendleton [1813 – 1892] and Henry Hooper; and Abigail (-2) Pendleton [1794 – 1869] and Francis Amy. Sadly, ten of Abigail’s children did not survive infancy.

Finally, the one “in-law” who had 15 children was Patience Little Rogers and Peleg (-2) Pendleton [1793 – 1874].

February 2010 Quiz

For this month’s question, I thought I might do something from the Hanifl (Grandma Sophie’s) side of the family… As you may know, Sophie was born in Oggau, Austria, or as it was known at that time, Austria-Hungary. Her parents, Karl and Theresa [Laschitz] Hanifl, decided to immigrate to the US.

What was the name of the ship that carried them to the US? (And, for extra credit, what year did they emigrate from Austria?)

A. HMS Pinafore
B. WS Graf Spee (pronounced “Grahf Shpee”)
C. SS Schiedam

You’re on your own for the date… It is, after all, extra credit!!!

Check back next month for the answer!

-- ANSWER

The correct answer is: C. SS Schiedam. The HMS Pinafore only existed in an operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan and the WS Graf Spee was a German "pocket battleship" that was scuttled by her captain off Montevideo, Uruguay after the Battle of the River Plate (Rio de la Plata) in December, 1939.

I’m not 100% sure of the source of the information about the SS Schiedam, but, I’m pretty sure it came from Karen [Currie] Hoel. Karen is a grand niece of Sophie [Hanifl] Pendleton. She has done a lot of research on the Hanifl side and I am thankful for the information that has filtered down to me from her.

There was also an “extra credit” portion to the quiz… When did Karl and Theresa emigrate? Karl, Theresa and 4 of their children (Sophie, Frank, John and Mary) arrived in New York on 11, May 1891. Three other children (Theresa, Rosalia and Josef) died prior to the time Karl and Theresa left Austria. Also, all the research I have done indicates that, at that time, a trans-Atlantic crossing took about 2 weeks!
