I was just informed that the Visitation scheduled for Saturday morning at the Schumacher-Kish funeral home in Onalaska has been changed to the Schumacher-Kish funeral home on West Avenue in La Crosse. The Visitation will start at 10 AM with a rosary at 11 AM and entombment in the Mausoleum at the Catholic Cemetery on Losey Boulevard in LaCrosse immediately after.

It is with great sadness that I report the news of the
passing of Mary Agnes [Pendleton] Ryan on 16, Jul 2012 at age 103.
“Aunt Mary Ryan” was born 25, Dec 1908 in La Crosse , Wisconsin
She was preceded in death by her parents in 1958, her
husband in 1979, 6 brothers: Edward (1993,) Art (1987,) Howard (1993,) Ray
(1989,) Arnie (2004) and Joe (2004) and 2 sisters: Margaret Niles (2003) and
Evelyn Ogden (2004.)
Mary married Francis Homer Ryan on 18, Jun 1941 in La Crosse
She is also survived by: Kathy and Ed Meyer’s children:
Steve and Katie [Welsh] Meyer and their daughter, Alyssa; Tom Meyer and his
daughter, Shelbie; Lori and Rob Larson and their children, Michael and Emily
Larson; Cindy Meyer and her children, Tabitha and Aaron Ziehr; and Melissa

Another member of Generation 5!
Please join me in welcoming the latest member of Generation 5, Lucile Janet Klossing! She was born 11, Jun 2012. She weighed 7.4 pounds and was 20 1/4 inches. What a cutie!Lucile is the daughter of Michael Klossing (4) and Victoria Nardni. Michael is the son of Penny Roberts (3) who is the daughter of Peggy [Pendleton] Roberts (2) who is the daughter of Edward Pendleton (1).

Well, I managed to get this month’s postings updated on the 1st of the month. Not too bad, considering that it’s the end of tax season.
As I said in last month’s post, I’ve been concentrating my research on Roy and Sophia’s parents and their descendants. I did run across a couple of interesting facts that I didn’t realize before, so I thought I would share.
Roy’s father was Beeley Blanchford Pendleton. Beeley was born on Deer Island, New Brunswick, Canada, 13, Dec 1824. His parents were John Fleming Pendleton and Mahitable Gardner. John F and Mahitable had eight other children beside Beeley, all of whom were born on Deer Island: John Gilkey Pendleton (b 1817), Mahitable (b 1819), James (b 1821), Salome (b 1827), Elmira (b 1830), Mary Anna (b 1838), Emeline (b 1841) and Sarah, who died in infancy.
John Fleming Pendleton died in 1843 and Mahitable died in 1844.
Beeley’s older brother, John, married Mary Jane Laughton in 1842. They had a son, Enoch, who was born 1, Jul 1843 and who died 6 days later and another son, Lewis, who was born 4, Sep 1844.
Sometime between 1845 and 1850, Beeley and John and Mary Jane all moved to Cleveland, Ohio.
The first thing I didn’t know before was that Beeley lived for a time in Cleveland. He shows up on the 1850 US Census as living there with his brother, John. So, my December, 2010 Quiz was wrong: Beeley lived in at least 7 places.
Another interesting thing is that, apparently, John G, his wife, Mary Jane, and Beeley took the youngest sisters, Mary Anna (Ann) and Emeline, with them to Ohio and raised them as their own children. In fact, Emeline was only three years older than John’s surviving son, Lewis. Remember, however, that by 1855, Beeley was living in Wisconsin, as that was the year he married Catherine Newkirk. It is likely, then, that John G and Mary Jane were more responsible for taking the sisters in than was Beeley.
Finally, John G and Mary Jane had five more children: Sarah (b 1846), Wellington (b 1848), Josephine (b 1851), William (b 1853) and Susanna (b 1855). Sarah and Wellington both died in February, 1850 and Josephine died in October, 1855. I have no idea where the name "Wellington" came from, but Beeley and Catherine used that for Roy’s middle name. Was Wellington a favorite nephew of Beeley? We will never know for sure.
To me, it sounds like the family ties were quite strong.

Hey all. First, my apologies for the lateness in the February and March postings. SOOOO much to do, SOOOO little time. Anyway, better late than never, I guess.
Second, thanks for all the positive feedback about the blog. I have been toying with the idea of dropping it, but I guess more people check it than I thought! Another ego boost for me was when I was looking for information on one person, this blog was listed as a source!
I’m still researching our collective family tree. I’m starting to concentrate on the descendants of Beeley and Catherine Pendleton (Roy’s parents) and Karl and Theresia Hanifl (Sophie’s parents.) I’m eagerly looking forward to April 3rd. That is the date the 1940 federal census becomes public – the federal census is confidential for 72 years. It will be the first time anyone in my generation will appear. OK. To ME that is excited.
Although I normally don’t include deceased relatives on the birthday postings, there are two I thought deserved mention. First is Roy’s mother, Catherine [Newkirk] Pendleton. She was born 5 Mar 1837 in Illinois and died 15, Jan 1916 in La Crosse. Second is Mary [Hanifl] Brey, Sophie’s sister. She was born 23 Mar 1886 in Oggau, Austria-Hungary and died 5 Dec 1987 in La Crosse.
The other piece of news since my last post is that Tammy [Hanna] Woodring fell on a patch of ice on the 8th of February and hit her head on the pavement and spent a few days in the hospital. If you have a chance, drop her a line.
I will do my best to get April’s postings on the blog in a more timely fashion. And, thanks again for all the feedback!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas season!
I spent the holiday at my daughter’s house near Madison. It was a special treat to see how excited my 5 year old granddaughter, Addison, was. When I finally schlepped out of my bedroom at 7:30 AM, she met me at my door wildly telling me that her stocking was “stuffed full” and that “Santa left a LOT of presents under the tree!!!!”
Even though it’s been fifty years since I was her age, I still remember how excited I was on Christmas morning. But, I think I cherish the memories of Christmas when Michelle was a kid even more. It was a time my sisters and I all got together at my parents’ house.
My mom always had a big Christmas dinner. It was the one time each year my mom went all out. So much food! Always a big ham (sometimes a turkey, too,) mashed potatoes, olives (usually a gallon jar,) a shrimp salad and her baked beans that she would hand sort the night before to make sure there were no small stones in the bag! And, SOOOOO many pies!
But, even more fun was to have all the grandkids (and later all the great-grandkids) together!!!! All the anticipation to find out what Santa left at Grandma’s house. Chris Niles sent me an E-Mail a couple days before Christmas and said, “…Christmas thru a child’s eyes is God’s miracle.” How true!!!
But, enough about me… How were your holidays? Feel free to post a comment or send me an E-Mail. How about sending me a couple paragraphs about a memorable holiday you had? Something touching… something funny... maybe something I can post to this blog?
Oh, and if you happened to miss it on the birthday list for December, Aunt Mary Ryan turned 103 on Christmas Day!

Welcome Clayton Ostmoe - Another member of Generation 4!
I must be slipping... It's been a week and I haven't posted this!
Welcome my new grandson, Clayton Ostmoe! Born December 7, 2011 to my beautiful daughter, Michelle and her husband, Eric Ostmoe. Clay was 9 pounds 11 ounces and 21 inches long.
Big sister, Addison, is proud of her baby brother in this picture of the three of them. (And, yes, that is my granddaughter, Addison, and NOT my sister, Ruth!)

Grandpa Roy had 7 siblings: James, Isaac, Florence, Pleasant Emma, George, Elmaria and Lily.
Isaac, Florence and Elmaria all died young. What was the primary occupation of the other four?

I found these answers in US census records. I'm assuming the occupations I list are correct, BUT, they may not be the ONLY occupation they held. If you are aware of any others, let me know!
James was a laborer at the La Crosse rubber mills (1910). He and his wife, Elizabeth Greineisen had five children.
Pleasant Emma married Burt Fessenden in 1884. They were farmers/ranchers in Montana (1910, 1920, 1930). She and Burt had eleven children.
George was a fireman on the railroad (1910). I have no record of George ever marrying or having any children.
Lily married Thomas Morris in 1886. Thomas was a barber when they were first married. He graduated from the Law School at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and was elected District Attorney of La Crosse County. Later, he was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly where, in 1909, he was instrumental in the establishment of a college that would eventually become the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. In 1911 he was elected to Lieutenant Governor for the State of Wisconsin which he held until 1915. He practiced law in La Crosse after that until his death from a sudden heart attack while visiting New York City in 1928. Lily and Tom had nine children.

First, I hope all of you in the US had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Mine was excellent. I spent the holiday with my daughter, Michelle, and her family in Madison, Wisconsin. I especially enjoyed being able to spend some time with my granddaughter, Addie, and to cook the big traditional Thanksgiving meal for all of them. Of course, watching the Packers beat the Lions and go to 11-0 was an additional thing to be thankful for! (Sorry to all the cousins in Michigan!)

November 2011 Quiz
So, I’m gradually getting back into my research mode. When I left off last spring, I was working on the Newkirk family. Remember that Roy’s mother was Catherine Newkirk.
One interesting thing that I have found is that many of the Newkirks in the 19th century liked to name their children after states. Which of the following states was NOT used as a first name?
A. Georgia
B. Louisiana
C. Missouri
D. Ohio

So far, I have found a Louisiana Newkirk (and another named Louisianna,) two people named Missouri Newkirk, and two people named Ohio Newkirk. I have NOT found anyone named Georgia Newkirk.
