Family Picnic - 2016

I just received an invitation from Pam Heath for the 2016 family picnic. The date will be August 7th (Sunday) starting at 10:00 AM. The event will be at Holland Town Hall just outside Holmen Wisconsin - same as in the past. You can click on this link for the location:

Pam ALWAYS does a super job organizing these and it's a great way to catch up with long lost relatives.

Hey all.... The next couple of weeks are going to be kind of busy. I'm working on a new certification for my Tax & Accounting business and I'm taking a couple seminars next week. I've been busily prepping for the exam. Anyway, I had a few extra minutes tonight and I thought I'd get the June Birthdays and Memorials posted EARLY!!!!

May 2016 Update

I hang my head in shame... I haven't updated this blog since last December.

I am up to date with everything that I have heard of in the past 5 months now, but I admit, I have been completely out of the loop during tax season so I may have missed something. Please E-Mail me with any news you'd like to share! It doesn't just have to be births and deaths... Weddings, graduations, retirements, job changes, health issues... Anything you want to share...

Rest In Peace - Jim Ogden

James "Jim" Ogden, age 77, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2016. He was born on January 3, 1939, the son of Herman and Evelyn (Pendleton) Ogden. Jim graduated from Central High School in 1956.

He was united in marriage to Joan Jerisha on Oct. 17, 1964, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Sharon, Dave and Julie.

Jim worked for Thorstad Chevrolet, in the parts department for over 30 years.

An accomplished violinist, Jim played… with the Madison Civic Orchestra and his passion for music stayed with him throughout his life as well as his fondness for his 1930 Model A Ford Coupe.

Jim is survived by his children, Sharon Wright, Dave (Diane Shorette-Ogden) Ogden and Julie (Pete) Gullickson; Joan Ogden who helped Jim through his lengthy illness; grandchildren; Lucas, Lauren and Keri; brothers, Frank (Rie) Ogden and Tom (Pat) Ogden; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Bob.

Rest In Peace - Matthew Marvin

Matthew L. Marvin age 42 left the earth on Tuesday October 27, 2015. He was born March 25, 1973 in El Paso, TX and resided in Beloit, WI most of his life. Matthew was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend. Matthew loved being a certified mechanic. His love of working on cars started at the age of fourteen. Through-out his life, he worked at Finley’s Rock County Buick and Budweiser as a certified mechanic.

He is survived by his parents, Charles Sr. and Debora; his sons, Zachary & Nicholas Marvin and their mother, Angela Marvin; his brother, Charles Marvin Jr.; his sister Christie (Clyde) Potter; his grandfather, Claude Marvin, his uncle, Bruce Marvin; mother in law, Diane Wolf; two sisters in law, Teresa Marvin and Melinda Wolf and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Merle Pendleton and Howard Pendleton, his paternal grandmother, Doris Marvin and his father in law, Terry Wolf.

May 2016 Dates to Remember

There are two interesting dates to note this month. First, the 27th marks the 100th anniversary of Karl Hanifl's death. Karl was Grandma Sophie's father and, along with his wife, Theresia [Laschitz] Hanifl, was responsible for emigrating the family from Austria-Hungary to the United States.

The other significant date also relates to the Hanifl side of the family. May 11th marks the 125th anniversary, 1891, of the Hanifl family arriving in the United States. Karl and Theresia emigrated from Oggau, Austria-Hungary (now Oggau, Austria,) with their four surviving children. (Three other children died prior to their emigration.) At the time the family arrived, Sophie was 11, Frank was 9, John was 7 and Mary was 5.

I’m not sure WHY the family emigrated to the U.S. or HOW they ended up in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I’m assuming the reason they emigrated was because they thought life would be better in the U.S. I also think they may have chosen La Crosse because there were a number of other emigres from Oggau who ended up in La Crosse. It could have just been that La Crosse had a large Germanic population – who knows for sure? All that really matters is that Sophie and Roy met and were married on Feb 7, 1906 and here we all are! J

As long as we’re on the topic of Oggau, about 18 months ago, I received an E-Mail from a Johann and Maria Hanifl who currently live in Oggau. Johann, who was 82 at the time, is a 3^rd cousin of mine which means that Karl Hanifl (MY great-grandfather) and Johann’s great-grandfather were brothers. It’s interesting to know that we all still have cousins in “the old world.”

Since I started this blog in 2008, I have heard from cousins in Canada, Scotland, England, Austria and several states in the U.S.
