December 2013

Hey all! It’s been a while since I posted anything. Sorry, it’s been a VERY busy year.

Tax season went by like a flash. Then, this spring, the company I work for sold off part of the business. I ended up working for the new company, too. As usual, the whole process ended up being a LOT more work than expected.

Also, this spring, a friend of mine, Teresa, whom I have known since kindergarten, and I took a “Hands-On” Advanced Pasta cooking class. Teresa is an amazing cook. She and I were given the responsibility of making the marinara sauce (among other things.) It was great taking the chef’s recipe and “doctoring it up” so that she and I were happy with it. Even the chef thought it was very good.

After that, I spent the summer replacing the old wooden retaining wall and fence around the front yard with a new stone wall, aluminum fence and an in-ground automatic sprinkler system– my LAST major outdoor project. This time I mean it. J (Although, I am going to miss working out in the sun and the heat; I LOVE the heat!) Next summer, I’ll have to content myself with gardening.

I pretty much completely zoned out during the fall. I puttered in the yard a bit, but basically didn’t accomplish much of anything other that catching up on crossword puzzles, cryptograms and cooking. I really needed the break.

I spent Thanksgiving at my daughter’s house. It is SO much fun spending time with the Grandkids! Addison (Addie) is 7 now and is in first grade. Clayton will turn 2 this Saturday (12/07/2013.) He is SUCH a grandpa’s boy!

Now that we are into the holiday season… I have to fit in 24 hours of continuing education for my Enrolled Agent’s license, I am working on becoming certified as a QuickBooks Pro Advisor before the end of the year, there is all that Christmas shopping to do, I need to start closing out the books for my accounting clients AND I have to gear up for the next tax season!!!!

But, what’s new with you??? Write and let me know what has been happening with you this year.

I hope you all have a marvelous holiday season and keep in touch!

2013 Pendleton Family Reunion

I received word from Pam Heath that the annual Family Picnic will be held Sunday, August 4th, 2013 at the Holland Town Hall on McHugh Road just west of Holmen, WI.

The picnic will start around 11 AM and (in the past,) usually lasts until about 4 in the afternoon.

Bring your own drinks and a dish to pass. Pam says there will be a raffle again this year along with games for the kids and possibly some new “stuff”… Who knows which long lost cousins will show up this year? Maybe you???

I just want to take a moment in advance to thank Pam for all the effort she puts into pulling this event together!!
Questions? Send me an E-Mail and I will tell you how to contact Pam. See you there!

Rest In Peace - Pat Hanna

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Pat [Niles] Hanna (2).

[Note: I edited this post on 1, April 2013. pjp.]

Pat died peacefully at home from the flu on 27, February 2013, one week after her 76th birthday.

Pat was born 20, February 1937 in La Crosse, WI, to Margaret [Pendleton] Niles (1) and Bill Niles. She married Jules Hanna who preceded her in death in 1997.

Pat is survived by her children, Tammy (Jeff) Woodring, Chris (Wendy) Hanna, Greg (Diana) Hanna, Mick (Cheryl) Hanna and Molly Hanna. She is also survived by three sisters, Nancy (Ken) Proctor, Jinny (Lenny) DeAngelis and Julie (Delton) Denzer and a brother Mike (Chris) Niles. Her full obituary is posted on the funeral home’s website: www.CrandellFH.com.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 3rd from 5 to 8 at Crandell Funeral Home in Fremont, MI. Her funeral will be at 11 AM, Monday, March 4th at Fremont Wesleyan Church.

She will be remembered as a loving mother and a true friend. To many, Pat seemed gruff on the outside, but those of us who knew her well knew it was all an act. Under that abrasive exterrior was a soft core and we all loved her for that.

Pat was also an incredible pianist. How ironic that Pat died on the same day as the other (lesser) pianist Van Cliburn! The announcement on NPR was that one of the world's great pianists had died and I thought to myself, "Wow! How did they know about Pat?"

One of the original purposes of this blog was to research and illuminate all of those strong minded and remarkable women in the Pendleton family who would have been dropped from previous genealogies. Pat was a wonderful example of that type of person. She started life faced with many obstacles and adversities, but overcame them all and was a devoted mother and a respected member of the community. I, for one, will truly miss her.

Please reach out to her family in their time of loss by contacting them or posting something on the funeral parlor’s website.

Family cookbook

Tammy [Hanna] Woodring (3) says that she is working on a family cookbook for next Christmas and is asking for family recipes and stories. If you have a favorite recipe or a story that you'd be willing to share, please send it to Tammy or to me and I will forward it on to her.

As I've said in previous posts, many of my favorite memories revolve around food, especially Aunt Mary Brey - the potato pancakes, the ten pound poppy seed cakes, the chocolate cookies that were like rocks...

But there are many others that I remember... Pat [Niles] Hanna's rouladen... my sister Ruth's smelt... my Grandma Olson's salmon patties (not all memories are good)... my mom's hamburger rice casserole and her rice dainty... I have my mom's and her mom's cookbooks and I know I will be scouring them for recipes to share.

What a great way to keep family traditions going!
